Abstract

This study was conducted to identify whether ethical values of Korean nurses are deontology or utilitarian.
The sample was consisted of 270 clinical nurses in three general hospitals. The data was collected by ethical value questionnaires, from April to May, 1999. The data was analyzed by using a frequency, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation with SPSS program.
The results of this study were as follows
1. The human life area mean score was 3.54, nurse-patient relationship area mean score was 3.31, nurse-nursing task relationship area mean score was 3.27, and nurse-colleagues relationship area mean score was 3.20. Therefore, nurses tend to take a deontological view.
2. There were significant differences in the level of nurse-nursing task relationship by age, post, and attitude of nursing (F=3.575**. F=4.769**, F=3.054*). There were significant differences in the level of human life by education level and perceived ethical principles (F=3.221*. F=2.816*). There were significant differences in the level of nurse-patient relationship by attitude of nursing and perceived ethical principles(F=3.054*. F=3.294*).
3. There were significant correlations between human life and nurse-nursing task relationship, and nurse-colleagues relationship(r=.156*, r=.177*), and between nurse-nursing task relationship and nurse-colleagues relati6nship(r=.143*).
In conclusion, ethical values of Korean nurses have deontological view, and related to demographic characteristics.
